On 3rd October, 2017 Access to Information (a2i) Programme of Prime Minister’s Office and Bangladesh BETAR jointly taken initiatives for Phone -in – Live Programme to discuss innovations and opportunities for persons with disabilities. Mr. Vashkar Bhattacharjee, National Consultant of a2i Programme explained that the government has enacted multiple laws for protecting the rights of disable persons, including their right to education. Students and youths with disabilities now having access to multimedia talking books and accessible dictionaries which have made education accessible for all.
Besides, Md. Lutfor Rahman Consultant (Innovation) of a2i was also present in this program and explained how a2i has partnered with Chittagong University to transform it into an inclusive university and called for innovative ideas using a challenge fund mechanism.
It is mentioned, that a2i has been operating Service Innovation Fund and organizing competitions for engaging youths to come up with innovations for empowering persons with disabilities, including solar powered tricycle, android-device controlled wheelchair, accessible road map and smart white cane for better mobility; multimedia talking books, accessible dictionaries, refreshable braille display and DAISY player for more accessible education; telemedicine supported specialized health care system for more accessible health care; talking device, speech-to-text convertible hand gloves and an easy conversant language for better communication between speech and hearing impaired persons and people with regular abilities; mobile app for detecting signs of autism and monitoring system for students with autism.
