‘gnorance is not bliss’

Bidita, an unfortunate mother of a child infected with polio virus had several tragic phases of motherhood. She gave birth to 3 dead children and his fourth son survived but that too struggling with polio virus. She is blaming her fate but if only she had taken better care of herself during pregnancy and taken recommended vaccinations then probably her other children would have survived. If she would have given her son polio and other immunity vaccinations on time, he could have fought against polio virus. “The only time I visited the community clinic was during delivery.” This is what Bidita said when asked about whether she had consulted any doctors for health assistance during and after pregnancy. Many women especially in the rural areas are unaware of the necessity of health consultation during pregnancy. However, low literate people in the remote regions are mostly unaware about vaccinations or health plans for mother and child care. Even the information available regarding maternity and child care are often inaccurate and misleading in rural areas.

Only a healthy mother can give birth to a healthy child

Improving health care system has always been a significant concern of a2i Programme. Access to Information (a2i) has launched an android mobile application named as ‘MA O SHISHU’. The application will be a nutrition and health guide for every mother and child. Diet chart during pregnancy, child diet plan on every phase of growth, vaccination information and many more healthy living tips will be available from this mobile application. This initiative promptly focuses on decreasing the maternal mortality rate according to Sustainable Development Goal-4. The educated citizens usually tend to be more aware about mother and child health but people living in the rural areas are reluctant about extra health care necessity for pregnant mothers and infants.

Through this application, pregnant women and mother of infants will be able to acquire relevant tips and knowledge about being safe and healthy along with their child.

Once a user installs the application on her android device, a profile of her will be created and she will be provided service according to her month of pregnancy or the age of her child. This has a follow-up system and will guide the mothers to have a healthy delivery and a good child care. Every Health Assistant in Union / Upazilla health complexes have been provided with the access to multiple user profile creation system of the MA O SHISHU application so that women who cannot afford to buy android mobiles can easily create a profile by the help of her nearest health assistant in union or Upazilla complex and will be followed up regularly. This will not only benefit the users but also the Union/Upazilla health assistants to keep detailed record of the patients and notify or enquire about the vaccination process. If the pregnant mother does not own an android phone then any of her family members or friends who have android mobile phone can install the app by the pregnant mother’s name and details. Duly SMS will reach the mother’s mobile to notify her about the doctor’s follow-up and vaccination alerts.

Notable benefits for the users

This service is inexpensive and saves lots of hassle and time which used to be spent in travelling to and from hospitals or health complexes. However, unless something severe happens, the mother and child will not have to visit the health complexes for health assistance as they can readily avail all the tips and suggestions from the mobile application.

Ensuring Safe Motherhood for the Foundation of a Better World

Problem:

There was no expert doctor in the Community Clinic of Sadhanpur for providing medical consultation and treatment to the pregnant women. Therefore, they needed to come in Upazila Health Complex for any heath related problem. But due to the long distance of Upazila Health Complex (approximately 25 kilometer) and lack of convenient communication system they suffered a lot which made them reluctant to get the service. In addition, for inconvenient transportation their sufferings became overmuch in emergency case of delivery which sometimes resulted in the death of mother, baby or both. As well as it was troublesome, time consuming and risky for them to come in Upazila Health Complex for regular checkup and it ultimately increased the cost of receiving the service.

Solution:

A doctor has been assainged in the Community Clinic from Upazila Health Complex by deputation to visit once or twice in a week for providing treatment and consultation to the pregnant women and infants. To reduce the transportation hassles at emergency need, a three wheeler van has been kept standby to carry risky pregnant women to the Upazila Health Complex. In addition, two mobile phones have been provided, one for Community Clinic and one for van driver so that pregnant women or their relatives can contact for any requirement.

Result:

Time, cost and visit for the service, on an average, saved by 71%, 80% and 20 % respectively. Besides reduction in TCV, the other outcomes of the project are:

  • Improvement in maternal care by reducing suffering of pregnant women
  • All most 100% reduction on maternal mortality and infant mortality rate
